EDT - EssentialDriver Training

Essential Driver Training
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory training course that teaches fundamental driving skills to learner car drivers. It is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and is intended to improve road safety.

EDT is a course of 12 one-hour lessons. These lessons are designed to cover certain critical driving skills and improve your practical driving skills.

As you complete each lesson, your Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) will record your progress in a specially issued logbook.

You should also have a Sponsor, an experienced driver (many learner drivers choose a family member) who will supervise your driving practice outside of lessons, and will also track your progress in your logbook.

EDT Lesson Hand-outs

EDT Lessons
In order to fully understand the Essential Driver Training Process, I strongly advise, that the learner driver & any Sponsor obtain a good understanding of the EDT process, and that they are aware that EDT lessons are only part of the learning to drive process. EDT Lessons are not designed to replace normal driving lessons, but rather to complement the driver training taken by first time learner drivers. EDT Lessons have a preperation requirement, this is work for the learner to do before taking the next EDT Lesson. This will typically involve a number of steps - taking driving lessons and considering the advice of the ADI, Practising with a Sponsor, studying material such as Rules of the Road and doing self analysis.

Information on EDT LESSONS can be viewed on the RSA website.

The EDT Learner Driver Information Booklet will also be supplied Free, when you start taking lessons
